Short description
Dorsal spines (total): 9; Dorsal soft rays (total): 16; Anal spines: 2; Anal soft rays: 14 - 15; Vertebrae: 24. Easily recognized by the red stripe, but this looks black in deep water (Ref. 48635). Preopercular serrae 27-44 (Ref. 9933).
Biology
    Glossary (e.g. epibenthic)
Usually lives in very deep water adjacent to reef drop-offs (Ref. 48635); also on sandy and rubble areas (Ref. 9710). Builds large rubble mounts (Ref. 48635). Feeds on zooplankton.
