Biology
    Glossary (e.g. epibenthic)
Occurs in schools in clear pools of medium to large rivers, ponds and lakes (Ref. 5723). Enters rivers in spring to spawn over gravel or vegetation. Feeds on insects, mollusks, and crustaceans; larger individuals feed on fish like Rutilus rutilus and Alburnus alburnus. Reproduces in spring. Eggs are found attached to gravel, weed and stones in shallow water (Ref. 41678). Catch is accidental. Often confused with Rutilus rutilus. Its flesh is not tasty (Ref. 30578). Aquarium keeping: at least 10 individuals; minimum aquarium size >200 cm; not recommended for home aquariums (Ref. 51539).
